Angle Valve: The Definitive Importing Guide
In this guide, you’re going to learn everything about the best angle valve for regulating fluids under intense pressure.
In fact: The guide explores everything – from basic definition, working principle, parts, manufacturing process, design specification, certification to types of angle valves.
I can promise you this – by the end of this guide, you will be an expert in angle valves.
Let’s get started…
Figure 1 Angle Valve
Chapter 1: What is an Angle Valve?
Indeed, this is the first question you’d possibly ask yourself if you hear the name for the first time. Well, it’s understandable given that not so many people tend to come across this device often.
Nevertheless, an angle valve refers to a particular pneumatically-controlled device which directly and regulates the direction of fluid flow. Figure 2 Brass Angle Valve
It functions in a manner that it opens, closes or partially obstructs many passageways. In simple words, it refers to a product which helps to compress, cut off, redirect or regulate liquids of gas flow.
The design of this tool is in such a way that the inlet and outlet ports are perpendicular to each other. Furthermore, an angle valve uses a linear motion to move the fluidized material into and out of the seating surface.
Do you get the idea now? I hope you do. That notwithstanding, let’s also look at other important aspects of this device to give more hint and understanding of what it is.
Angle Valve Symbol
In any technical or engineering drawing, we represent hydraulic pipeline elements or pipe fittings using symbols. With this, engineers and technicians can interpret the circuit diagrams and choose components.
Therefore, an angle valve is no exception. So, how does an angle valve symbol look like? Figure 3 Angle valve symbol
Of course, depending on the situation at hand, or application, you may have other variations of angle valve symbol as the angle globe valve:
Figure 4 Angle globe valve
Or this:
Figure 5 Angle valve symbol
Therefore, in case you see these symbols in any piping circuit, know that it is an angle valve symbol. With that in mind, let me take to yet another critical aspect – angle valve construction.
Angle Valve Construction
Now, this is another fundamental element that you ought to know concerning angle valve. Typically, the nature of the function that this tool is designed to do makes its construction and design a critical concern.
Figure 6 Angle construction
First of all, you need to know that the angle valve can have a cage-style construction and at times and expanded outlet connections.
Also, this unit can come with a restricted trim, and at times outlet liners to help in reducing possible flashing, erosion or cavitation damage. So what I’m trying to say here? Figure 7 Angle Valve with Different Construction
The thing is: The structure of the angle valves is in such a way that the entrance and exit of the fluidized material traverse perpendicularly.
In other words, the horizontal line represents the entrance while the vertical line indicates the exit. What happens is the construction of this tool enables slurry fluids to pass through it quickly.
In such a case, it makes it suitable to control or regulate the flow of such slurry fluids. Furthermore, the design of the valve also helps in preventing the valve from damaging as a result of fluid cavitation or flashing.
And in the regard, you’ll notice that the angle valve in most cases is adopted to solve problems that seem difficult with general-purpose valves.
It’s for that reason that several materials such as ceramic and cemented carbide can be applied to this device’s trim parts. Such materials help in trimming and peripheral parts of the angle valve to handle special needs it is designed for.
Characteristics of an Angle Valve
Technically, you need to understand the essence of installing an angle valve before even thinking of buying or shopping for it. So what happens is that you’ll often install this device with pumps, fittings, piping, and other relevant process equipment.
It follows that the pressure will now drop across the valve varyingly as the plug moves through its travel. Therefore, one vital characteristic of this unit is that when it opens, the pressure flow of fluids decreases across the valve.
The other feature is that it can be made of a wide range of materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and Cr-Mo steel among others.
And this incidentally is quite obvious given that the role it plays is quite phenomenal to use any type of inferior material. An angle valve also needs to have a specific pressure rating. That is a vital point that will also enable you to make the right purchase decision.
Of course, the pressure rating of any particular angle valve depends on the application. Similarly, the temperature range also needs to be specific.
It is also an important aspect that allows you to determine the precise angle valve you’re purchasing. This device also has actuators.
These may range from piston cylinder, pneumatic diaphragm as well as electric motor.
Figure 8 Angle valve in piping system
And while still on the same point, the angle valve has accessories for easy operation such as a limit switch, and positioner among others.
Angle Valve Advantages and Disadvantages
Well, as you can see so far, it is quite apparent that an angle valve is quite a fundamental tool to have in pressured fluid flow control.
However, it is still important to recognize that this device also has its advantages and disadvantages. So in this section, I want us to look at some of the core advantages and the shortcomings of using this particular tool.
Figure 9 Angle stop valve – Photo courtesy: Dengarden
· Provides a high fluidize material flow rate with low pressure loss
So the first obvious advantage is that using this device helps in providing a high fluidize material flow rate with low-pressure loss.
What this means is that you will not necessarily have to use a lot of pressure for the fluid to traverse this unit. So in a nutshell, it makes it possible for you to attain a useful and excellent flow rate.
· Prevents both “water hammer” and backflow
The other advantage is that this item helps in elimination of water hammer as well as the resistance to backflow.
Additionally, this device is essential when it comes to regulating the flow of different types of fluids, steam, vacuum, gases and aggressive fluids.
Nonetheless, the angle valve can also operate with high viscosity media and high temperatures even under zero differential pressures.
What’s more? Its robust construction makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of harsh applications. The essence of this is that it provides excellent long-life alternatives to the similar conventional devices such as the ball valves.
So you can sit comfortably knowing too well that every aspect of controlled fluid flow will be efficient when using this tool.
· Easy to operate and maintain
By the way, maintaining an angle valve is also easy and flexible. Imagine you can merely remove it, repair and install it without necessarily detaching the instrument and actuator connections.
Also, the angle valve allows you to operate it using either single or double acting configuration. This is vital since the modes of operation ultimately influence its pressure rating. Figure 10 Multi turn angle valve
On the other hand, we should also not forget that this device has some of its shortcomings. And it would be vital also to highlight a few of them in this guide just to give you an idea.
· Installing angle valve requires experience and expertise
One probable disadvantage is that this device requires some sort of expertise to install it effectively. You see, it is not something that you’re going to buy and then just fix it on the particular application.
There is a need for understanding various elements that revolve around it as well as the ideal one for the specific application.
· Poor installation and maintenance can lead to a disaster
The other disadvantage is that poor installation and maintenance can be risky to both human and the surrounding.
So you have to ensure that you regularly maintain it and replace any worn out parts accordingly. This is the only way of guaranteeing the safety of using this device, especially in industrial applications.
Otherwise, this tool offers a high level of efficiency which also makes it possible for you to attain the best results all-round.
Therefore, in the next chapter, I want us to look at some of the parts and components of an angle valve. It is significant to do so because it enables you to know the nitty-gritty when it comes to an understanding of the working principle of this device. And that is something we’ll look at later on in this guide.
Chapter 2: Angle Valve Parts and Components
The truth of the matter is that from a mere appearance, you may think that an angle valve is a basic device. Figure 11 Basic design of angle valve
However, this an equipment is of great essence given that it contains quite a lot of parts and components that you can ever think of.
These parts and components are what makes it perform its roles accordingly. And as we discuss the parts, you must know that every component has a role it plays in the overall function, which is also fundamental.
So let’s get straight to the point and find out more about the parts and components of this device;
Figure 12 Parts of Angle Valve
i. Angle Valve Body
This refers to the part of this device which acts as a pressure boundary of the valve. In other instances, it is known as a shell. The body serves as the primary element of the valve assembly given that it is the structure which holds every component in place.
ii. Angle Valve Bonnet
This refers to the part which covers the opening in the valve body. Primarily, it serves as a second principal pressure boundary of the valve. The attachment of the valve bonnet to the valve body forms the pressure boundary. So in other words, the bolts which connect these two parts are pressure-retaining parts.
iii. Angle Valve Handle
It is the part of this device which you use to regulate or control the pressure fluid flow. It is a simple part that only needs you to turn it in the appropriate direction to determine the pressure you prefer.
Figure 13 Angle Valve Parts

iv. Valve disk
This is also another fundamental component of the angle valve which helps in providing the capability for stopping or allowing fluid flow.
It is generally forged, and in some instances, you’ll find that they are hard surfaced as a way of ensuring ideal wear resistance.
v. Valve O-Ring
Well, this one refers to a loop of elastomer that comes with a relatively round cross-section. The design of this component is to enable it to seat in a groove so that it can be compressed during assembly between two or more parts. So while at it, the valve O-ring creates a seal at the interface.
Figure 14 Right angle valve

vi.Valve Stem
This is the component that connects the actuator, commonly known as a hand wheel and the disk. The Angle valve stem is responsible for positioning the disk and tends to come in various categories, including, sliding, rising and non-rising stems.
vii. Valve packing nut
This refers to the part which prevents any kind of leakage that might likely occur from the space between stem and bonnet.
viii. Valve Gasket
This refers to the component that seals the valve cover to the upper portion. Its primary function is to prevent fluid leakage during high-pressure flow as well as protecting the valve cover from high pressure and temperature.
ix. Valve seat
This is the parts that provide a seating surface for the disk — it plays a fundamental role in enhancing the wear-resistance of the seal rings. In most cases, you’ll find that surface of the valve sat is always hard-faced by welding then the machining.
Ordinarily, this prevents the contact surface of the seal ring from wearing out. Now, as you can see, the angle valve tends to look like a small device, but it contains quite a number of components.
All these and many other components play different roles in the overall functionality and efficiency of this device. And that is the reason it is significant to ensure that you understand and know all these different parts.
In the next section, I want us to look at some of the different types of angle valves which are available in the market. So that next time you think of shopping for one, you’ll be able to know the different options to pick from.
Chapter 3: Types of Angle Valves
You see when you decide to but this particular device, you ought to know that they come in different types. What this means is that in as much as they play somewhat similar function, they could also have a few difference in various aspects.
So to make your selection relatively easy, it would be necessary to find out the different types of angle valves.
The truth is that these angle valves are numerous and at times picking the ideal one can be challenging. Nonetheless, as we discuss the different available types, you’ll be able to figure out the specific ones which perhaps fits your needs.
For that matter, let’s get straight to the point and look at some of these types of angle valves;
· Angle stop valve
This refers to the valve which connects the water pipes of a building to a toilet’s faucet or water supply line. Figure 15 Angle stop valve
It essentially attaches to the pipe which comes out of the wall whereas a straight stop connects to pipes which penetrate the floor.
The good thing with angle stop valve is that it easily allows you or your plumber to replace the faucet without turning off the water of the entire building.
· Compression angle valve
This is a type of angle valve that uses a compression nut in squeezing the brass ring into space that’s between a building’s water pipe and angle stop body.
Figure 16 Compression angle valve
· Multi-Turn Angle Valve
This refers to a type of angle valve which features a stem that has a rubber washer on its end, attached to valve handle.
Figure 17 Multi turn angle valve
So it happens that when you turn it, the stem tends to move into the cavity of the valve hence compressing the washer and forming a seal.
· Angle ball valve
This refers to a rotational motion valve which uses a ball-shaped disk to stop or allow fluid flow.
Figure 18 Angle ball valve
It is an essential one since it helps in effective maintenance of high volume, pressure and temperature flow.
· Ceramic angle valve
This is a type of angle valve made of ceramic. They provide a relatively new experience in the plumbing system given that the material is somewhat unconventional.
Figure 19 Ceramic angle valve
This type of angle valve features outstanding hardness and wear-resistance making it ideal for handling high pressure and temperatures.
· Mini Angle Valve
It is a type of angle valve which is commonly used in modern bathrooms, a kitchen, and some toilets.
Figure 20 Mini angle valve
The material used for making this particular angle valve is hardy hence making it relatively durable.
· Washing machine valves
As the name suggests, this refers to the type of angle valve used in washing machines. Figure 21 Washing machine valve
They help in providing the necessary pressure to enable this machine to work effectively.
· Chrome angle valve
It is the type of angle valve which is made of chrome material.
Figure 22 Chrome angle valve
Ordinarily, this is often a hard material thus making it one of the best for this particular device.
· PEX angle valve
Ordinarily, PEX refers to a leading brand worldwide that produces a wide range of plumbing and fitting accessories.
Figure 23 PEX angle valve
So in general, the PEX angle valve refers to one of the products that this company produces. It is a suitable component given that the brand name itself is also reputable across the European region and beyond.
· Ice maker box valve
It is a type of valve which you use inside the ice making machine. Usually, an ice maker needs a powerful compressor to make it possible for it to create the pieces of ice.
Figure 24 Ice maker box valve
So in that case, the valve plays an integral role in making sure that it compresses all the relevant elements to make the ice.
· Ice maker water hammer arrestor
It refers to the type of device which you install near the valve to prevent a particular banging noise from
the pipe.
Figure 25 Ice maker water hammer arrestor
Often, water hammer always arises as a result of pressurized and incompressible water in the pipes. So any incident that revolves around sudden alteration of the water flow by closing the valve causes banging sound.
· Thermostatic radiator valve
This refers to a type of valve which senses the air temperature around it and then regulates water flow through the radiator which it’s fitted to. Figure 26 Thermostatic radiator valve
Most of the available thermostatic radiators are bidirectional. Therefore, you can fit it to either flow or return. However, it’s advisable always to fit it to the flow side.
· 2 in 1 angle valve
It refers to the type of angle valve that is mostly installed in areas where the effect of gravity is a concern.
Figure 27 2 in 1 Angle Valve
Most of them are used in areas such as bathrooms which require distinctive fittings and designs to suit your needs.
· ¼ turn angle stop valve
This is a type of angle valve which essentially shuts off the plug in the house with a quarter turn.
Figure 28 ¼ turn angle stop valve
So what this means is that this type of valve you will provide you with the necessary extended service given that you won’t be turning is wholly every time.
· 2-way angle valve
It is a type of valve which allows dual compression of water flow that can happen simultaneously.
Figure 29 2 way angle valve
It uses an angle cock, and it’s also knob controlled, often suitable for bathroom fitting.
· 3-way angle valve
This refers to a type of angle valve which supports triple compression of water flow which can as well co-occur.
Figure 30 3 way angle valve
Just like the 2-way angle valve, this one also uses angle cock; it is knob controlled in most cases and ideal for bathroom fitting.
Well, all these are the types of angle valves that you’re highly likely to find whenever you’re shopping for one. As you can see, even from the names, they somewhat offer distinct features which makes them unique from each other.
Therefore, when you decide to get one, ensure that you clearly understand if it fits your needs accordingly.
Chapter 4: Working Procedure of Angle Valves
Without any doubt, understanding the working principle of an angle valve is one of the most significant aspects which you ought to know.
This is what enables you even to make an informed decision on the basis of what you want to purchase. It is thus necessary to ensure that you know how this device functions so that when it comes to picking one, you do it with sufficient knowledge.
Well, the truth is that the working procedure of this accessory is not necessarily complicated. You only need to grasp the basics, and you’ll be good to go.
You see, it is the angle valve that’s regarded as the mos common ultimate control element in the process control applications.
What happens is that this item manipulates a flowing fluid such as gas, chemical compounds, and water to compensate for the load disturbance.
Also, it needs is to try and keep the regulated process variable as close as possible to the preferred set point. So in general, this is how an angle valve works; The operation of this device is pneumatic, which means that it uses air pressure to control the piston actuator.
At the same time, it the air pressure which subsequently lifts the valve plug off its seat.
Normally Closes (NC) valves often have the valve closed in unpressurized conditions. They utilize the spring to return the valve to the particular rest state.
On the other hand, Normally Open (NO) has a valve always opening open unless air pressure closes it. You can obtain a NO in any event that you place the spring on the opposite side of the piston actuator.
What’s more is that you can use double acting valves to handle flow in both directions. It happens that these valves do not have springs, so they depend on air supply in determining valve position.
In other words, these configurations tend to influence the valve closely by 50%. Nonetheless, when you fit a strong return spring, it makes it easy to increase the working pressure.
You will, however, require a larger actuator to overcome the increased spring strength. So with flow over the seat, the valve achieves full working pressure and water hammer can be reduced by limiting supply flow of compressed air.
Now that is how primarily this device works. It is nevertheless important to acknowledge the fact that you need to understand the specific type of angle valve works.
Of course, this is a general working procedure, but as you can see in the earlier section, the types of valves are quite several. And for that reason, there ought to be a slight difference in the working principle of most of these devices.
That notwithstanding, they all somewhat play a similar role and functions in one way or the other.
Chapter 5: Angle Valve Manufacturing Process
Angle valves are among the most critical components used in several industrial and other residential processes.
For that reason, it is essential to ensure that it undergoes all the necessary procedures while manufacturing it.
The functions of this device are sensitive hence the quality should always be at the required standard. In this section, I want us to look at the step by step processes involved in the overall angle valve manufacturing. Here we go;
Step 1: IQC-Incoming quality control
This is the first procedure of the manufacturing process of this particular process. What significantly happens, in this case, is that before anything else, all the materials are tested and verified to be ideal for the production process.
In other words, the essence here is to ensure that the raw materials match the required standards of manufacturing this device.
Figure 31 High quality angle stop valve
And this is necessary since it forms the basis of determining the best material for manufacturing of high-quality angle valve. Of course, the testing takes place in laboratories using different types of machines.
Step 2: Cut the brass rod raw material
Now this second step of the angle valve manufacturing process. In this stage, the whole idea is to split the raw material into pieces depending on the length of the product.
This process is also highly intensive and requires one to use special devices to cut it accordingly. Nonetheless, you need to ensure that the length of the piece that you’re cutting matches that of the angle valve. Figure 32 View of angle stop valve
The importance of this is that it will make it possible for you to have a relatively strong and standard angle valve.
Step 3: Forge the brass rod
Well, remember that you also have to heat the raw material intensively, which in this case is the brass rod. Now, once you heat the rod, you need to forge it because this is what will enable you to attain the right shape and design of the angle valve.
Figure 33 Basic shape of angle stop valve
Remember that you also need to be careful at this stage since you would never want to mess with the forging process.
The reason for this is that once you mess with it then probably you’ll need to start a new process all over again. And this can be tiring and time-consuming. So the best way is making sure that you forge the brass rod accordingly.
Step 4: Send the semi-finished product to CNC Center
After forging the brass rod, you’ll now have to send it to the CNC center. Remember at this stage; the product is still at the semi-finished stage. And therefore, it becomes somewhat easy to give it the necessary shape and design.
CNC center general refers to a machining process that you use to make cylindrical parts. The cutting tool here moves linearly as the workpiece rotates.
Figure 34 Finished angle stop valve
A CNC center is also has a computer numerical control, and some of them can perform a wide range of drilling and milling operations. Therefore, what I’m trying to say here is that after forging the brass rod, you send it to this machine to turn and drill it accordingly.
Step 5: Angle Valve Finishing Process
When you get to this stage, it means that you’re almost edging closer to the end of the manufacturing process. So it means that you can now take it through a few procedures as a way of making it appealing and also enhancing its quality.
Figure 35 Multi turn angle valve in upright position
So here are the few major stages in the angle valve finishing process;
i. Annealing all semi-finished products
Here, all you need to do is using all the relevant materials to harden the angle valve. The essence here is apparently to make it stronger so that it can be able to resist a wide range of elements for better functioning.
Also, annealing of this device ensures that it obtains the necessary features that will enable it to withstand other functional conditions.
ii. Polishing semi-finished product
Now, this part involves refining the product in a manner that allows it to look appealing and also obtain other necessary features.
In this case, it becomes necessary also to ensure that you use the recommended materials for polishing the semi-finished product.
Nonetheless, you also ought to realize that in this process only becomes feasible after annealing it. The reason, of course, is that polishing it before annealing would perhaps deface it.
iii. Chrome Plating
Then this is the final stage in the angle valve finishing product. It primarily refers to the process or technique of electroplating a thin chromium layer on to a metal object.
Figure 36 Chrome plated angle valve
So you realize that chrome plating helps in enhancing the final and overall appearance of this particular device. Once this is over, then it means that the angle valve finishing stage is over.
Step 6: Testing the quality
At this stage, it means that you’re done with the actual processing of the angle valve apart from the formalities.
Figure 37 Quality angle valve
So, it means that once you take the angle valve to a laboratory which has the relevant equipment for testing.
The essence of testing the device is necessarily about determining whether or not it has attained the required quality. The tests are quite a several, and some of the machines used in the labs include the following;
i. Life cycle testing machine
This machine is imperative in the overall quality testing of the angle valve. It happens that the product is taken through the machine as a way of evaluating and predicting the reliability as well as durability of the product.
In life-cycle testing, the product is subjected through several accelerated stress conditions for every life cycle phase. The results can help to identify the design weaknesses, and also evaluate the performance at the extreme functional conditions.
ii. Water flow machine
This purpose of this machine is to help in evaluating or measuring the ability of the angle valve to hold water.
The test often involves determining a different level of the device to hold water in various pressures. The essence here is also to ensure that the right level is attained which helps to prevent the subjecting the angle valve into extreme water pressure.
In a nutshell, water flow testing machine enables you to know the water pressure level ideal for the particular angle valve.
iii. Bend strength tester
As the name suggests, this machine is helpful in testing the level of bending that an angle valve can get to. It is also a vital machine instrument because as you know, the angle valves can be subjected to different temperature levels during operation.
So this test is helpful as it allows you to know the end that an angle valve can get into. In other words, this unit helps in determining the highest stress within the product at its moment of yield.
iv. Torque tester
This instrument is also another vital one in testing the quality of the angle valve during manufacturing. The essence of torque testing in this instance is to evaluate or calibrate the torque-controlled applications.
What this means is that it is all about the fine-tuning process of renewing the angle valve back within its tolerance. During torque testing, several components come into play such as measuring and analyzing analysis of torque characteristics.
And what you must also have in mind is that failure of testing torque characteristics can be catastrophic.
v. Hydraulic testing machine
This is arguably one of the most critical tools that you use in testing the quality of the angle valve during processing.
You see, the test itself involves testing of the angle valves to determine the strengths and leaks. And since this device is more of a pressure vessel, it becomes fundamental to assess such characteristics.
Nonetheless, this machine also provides results that you can then use to determine whether or not it would be ideal to use the device on specific conditions.
vi. Salt spray test cabinet
Listen, one element which you also ought to realize is that you can use angle valves in different environmental conditions.
And so salt spray test cabinet is essential when it comes to determining the corrosion-resistance ability of this device. The test, of course, is vital because it makes it possible for you to know whether the unit would be ideal especially in a high saline environment.
vii. Dezincification Resistance Test Machine
Well, this is also another fundamental machine that you use in testing the quality of the angle valve. As you know by now is that angle valves are manufactured using quite different types of materials.
So carrying out a dezincification resistance test is primarily to help in evaluating whether the unit can retain the zinc in the alloy.
You see, if it becomes possible that it is not resistant to dezincification, then it means it shall have little mechanical strength. And for obvious reasons, if an angle valve can fail to pass the dezincification resistance process, then you can hardly use for the main purpose.
Step 7: Assembly and Packaging
Here now comes the final stage of the manufacturing process of the angle valve. Once you finish with all the tests accordingly, the next thing to do is now to assemble the unit and pack it.
Figure 38 PEX Angle Valve
Assembling, in this case, means joining all the different parts and components together so that it can be easy for the buyer to use once they purchase.
In most instances, you’ll find that there are particular equipment that you’ll always use to assemble some of the parts.
In fact, it becomes easy to assemble the unit with such machines because it helps to attain the necessary standard.
And the packaging is simply placing the device inside the particular pack for easy and convenient transportation. The bottom line is that you have to attain the necessary standards even in packaging because that’s one of the crucial selling points.
So that’s necessarily the processes that you undertake in manufacturing an angle valve. As you can see, it is an intensive process which merely involves all aspects, especially regarding quality.
It is thus a clear indication that it’s rare to find a low-quality angle valve in the market, especially from a reputable brand. And talking of product quality, we want to look at the certifications of an angle valve in the market in the next chapter.
Chapter 6: Angle Valve Certifications in the Market
Well, one of the most important elements regarding angle valves is that they have to obtain relevant certifications before getting to the market. Of course, this is essential since it’s a way of ascertaining that the product is indeed suitable for the market.
Figure 39 Angle valve certifications
And for it to get the approval, it also means that it is safe to use and meets all the minimum quality standards.
Now, what you have to know is that angle valves have different certifications bodies across the world. In fact, it’s like each region or target market has their own specific accreditations for this particular products.
And this is certainly fundamental given that every market has its own dynamics. Like I did mention earlier on, we want to look at some of the standard certification bodies of this product in the market. So without taking much of your time, let get straightaway and find out more about the same.
• CE, ACS, WRAS, for the European market
Now, these are the key certification bodies that approve the quality of angle valves to be used in the European market.
They are well-spelled out including all the conditions that such a particular product must meet before getting this certification mark. CE marking indicates that the device conforms with health, safety, and environmental protection standards.
Figure 40 CE Certification
In other words, it’s a marking which indicates manufacturer’s declaration that the products meet the standards of the EC directives.
This marking apparently targets all angle valves and other many products that are sold within the European Economic Area.
Also, you can as well find the CE marking on products sold outside of the EU market, or designed to be sold in EEA. And it’s for that reason that makes this marking quite phenomenal even to those who are unfamiliar with the European Economic Area.
On the other hand, WRAS is also a critical certification marking that an angle valve needs to obtain. So for this product to get WRAS approval, it means that it has to comply with the Water Fitting/Supply regulations.
The essence of this certification is to guarantee that the device shall never cause waste, misuse, leakage or undue consumption of water supply. Therefore, an angle valve has to through mechanical and water quality testing.
In other words, WRAS certification demonstrates the product’s compliance with the requirements of the regulations and the by-laws. It is also a common certification standard for different products, including angle valves targeting the European market. However, it’s also used in other markets other than the EU region.
· CUPC, AB1953, NSF/ANSI 61 for Northern America market
Now the American market is even trickier especially when it comes to the product’s compliance with the required quality standards.
Figure 41 Angle valve certifications
You see, before using any mechanical product for that matter, the certification bodies have to approve that it indeed meets the stipulated requirements.
CUPC is one of the bodies that approve whether or not the product meets or is suitable for the market. It is basically an abbreviation for Canadian Uniform Plumbing Code.
It is apparently designated as the Canadian national standards for a wide range of plumbing products. So the essence of CUPC is to provide you as the consumer with safe and sanitary plumbing systems.
And this is important given that angle valves are used in different applications, be it commercial or industrial. AB1953 is the other common certification standard that an angle valve has to meet especially if you’re using it in the Northern American market.
This standard simply describes that any pipe and fitting component should never have more than a weighted average of 0.25% lead content. Moreover, this standard never distinguishes between residential and commercial use.
Therefore, any installation of a particular product which has to dispense water particularly for human consumption must meet the lead content.
NSF/ANSI 61 is also another common American quality standard for certifying the use of angle valves particular for the supply of water.
This standard establishes strict requirements for the control of units that comes in contact with either portable water or products supporting portable water production. NSF/ANSI 61 standard uses different means to carry out the test.
And these tests range from simple cold water test to relatively complicated chemical certification. So in other words, it is an ideal standard that helps in enhancing the safety of consumers by developing standards and procedures for manufacturing.
· ISO9001, ISO 14001 for factory
Then there are these standards that factories manufacturing the angle valves and other related components need to meet.
ISO9001, for example, is a standard which defines the specific requirements for a quality management system. So in this case, a factory has to use this standard as a measure of its ability to consistently manufacture products which meet consumers and regulatory requirements.
What this implies is that any factory that produces this product need to obtain the ISO9001 certification. ISO14001 is also the other fundamental certification standard that a factory manufacturing angle valves needs to obtain.
In general, ISO 14001 gives specifications for an effective environmental management system. In other words, this standard gives a structure that the factory or manufacturer needs to follow.
So it is always important to make sure that you look into such standards, which apparently are strict and rarely can a manufacturer operate without them.
These are the common certification standards for angle valve quality. They help in making sure that you get a suitable, safety and high-quality product. For that reason, you’ll have a peace of mind knowing too well that you’re purchasing an approved angle valve to use in different applications.
Nonetheless, you also need to know some of the key specifications of the angle valve that you must consider when shopping for some. And that is what we want to have a look at in the next chapter. So just scroll down and let’s find out more information about the same.
Chapter 7: Angle Valve Specifications – What to Consider Before Buying Angle Valves
As at now, you ought to have noticed that several factors determine the quality, reliability as well as efficiency of an angle valve.
Figure 42 Angle ball valve
It is equally significant to know that in many occasions, you hardly find a particular angle valve that fails to offer particular unique specifications.
In other words, you need always to be keen whenever you choose to purchase this device. And the only ideal way of attaining this is by knowing what you necessarily need and what you’re certain shall meet your requirements.
In this chapter, I want to take you through some of the key specifications that you must look into whenever you’re purchasing an angle valve. And some of these elements include the following;
· Design
Of course, different types of angle valves come in various configurations. It is also the same thing that happens with different brands.
Figure 43 Different designs of angle ball valve
Now, a crucial aspect regarding the design of this device revolves around its application. Some of the designs are meant explicitly for particular applications and thus may not fit or may cause inefficiency if used otherwise.
The other important element regarding design is the fact that you perhaps need a valve that is appealing to the eye. Well, this is also an ideal consideration especially if you fit the angle valve in a somewhat visible area.
· Valve Type
This is also another fundamental element which you need to consider whenever you’re buying an angle valve.
Figure 44 Different types of angle valves
Undoubtedly, the selection of the particular type of valve is also dependent on the application. You see, you may choose to do with high-pressure service, labyrinth trim angle, super high pressure, and venture throat among others.
So, it shows that your needs are the factors that will determine the type of valve you’ll require. In that case, you need to consult an expert to advise you accordingly on what type of valve would suit your application.
The essence, in this case, is to find an ideal valve type that enables you to attain the best results from your application.
· Angle valve size
When you’re buying an angle valve, the size is also a fundamental concern that you should even figure out. Indeed, these items are available in different sizes. It thus means that you have to be selective if all you’re looking for the best one for your application.
Figure 45 Mini angle valve
Sizes matter because they also determine the general efficiency of the device. Angle valves are sized in a similar manner of sizing a pipe.
Unfortunately, people tend to measure the outside diameter of the outlet or inlet ports of this product, which shouldn’t be the case. In other words, large sizes tend to be more effective than small-sized angle valves, but only when used for fitting applications.
· Pressure rating
You see, the fundamentals of angle valves lie on the pressure that it can sustain in a fluid flow. When selecting this product, you must ensure that it can withstand the particular pressure you’ll subject it into.
Figure 46 Multi turn valves for different pressure ratings
In a nutshell, you must never buy an angle valve that can never sustain the pressure rating for your needs. It then implies that it wear out as soon as you start using it.
Alternatively, it is a sign that it will never serve you accordingly, which in most instances can be frustrating.
· Material
If there is any other fundamental element you must always consider when shopping for an angle valve, it has to be the material.
Figure 47 Chrome angle valve
Different manufacturers use various types of materials to manufacture their various products. Nevertheless, most of the materials used for manufacturing this product are often durable.
For instance, carbon and stainless steel are the common material you’ll find in most of the angle valves in the market.
Ordinarily, these are regarded as some of the hardy metals around. The essence is that the material also has to withstand the various operational and environmental conditions that the product will be subjected to.
· Temperature range
In most instances, the temperature range often depends on the specific application. So, there are those applications which require you to constrict, cut off or redirect relatively high-temperature fluid flow.
Figure 48 1/4 angle stop valve
In such cases, you need to ensure that you get an angle valve which necessarily can endure the temperature effectively. So in short, make sure that you get an angle valve which can sustain different temperature ranges including high or low.
· Mode of operation
When buying an angle valve, you also need to determine whether you need a manual or an automatic one. Of course, this depends on your preference, type of application as well as your budget.
But the truth of the matter is that an automatic angle valve will in most instances serve you better than a manually-operated one. However, you still need to weigh and determine which one you’re comfortable with even regarding operating.
Figure 49 Multi turn angle valve
Also, if your application is kind of small-scale, you can choose to go with the manually operated angle valve. Otherwise, if it’s for commercial or industrial applications, the ideal one would be the electronic unit.
· Aftersales service
Well, this is also an essential factor which you should never forget to consider when looking for an ideal angle valve.
You see, we have different manufacturers for this product. And the manner each of them handles you as a customer before, during and after the purchase has to be a great concern.
You’ll find that the most considerable interest of some of these manufacturers is to make the sale and that’s it. On the other hand, some of them will ensure that they offer quality aftersales service once you buy and leave the outlet.
Obviously, you should go for the latter. Remember the angle valve can be cumbersome at times to deal with. Or in other instances, it might develop unnecessary hitches which require experts’ intervention.
So the best thing to do is making sure that you research diligently and find a company which offers high-quality aftersales service.
In fact, this gives you a peace of mind knowing too well that in case of any hitch, you’re only a call or email away from getting necessary assistance.
· Application and function
The bottom line is that the application of the particular angle vale you’re seeking is what determines the type you’ll purchase. Listen, this means that the angle valve you’re buying depends on the various functions you may require to fulfill.
Figure 50 Washing machine valve
Obviously, different types of angle valves are capable of meeting the requirements of your specific application.
For example, you need to determine whether the valve needs to stop or start the flow entirely. Or should it play a flow throttling or regulatory role?
You also need to look at other factors revolving the same such as the level of leakage that the system can tolerate among others.
· Repair and maintenance requirements
It is also necessary to determine how frequently you’ll need to repair and maintain the angle valve once you start using it.
Of course, you understand that from time to time, you’ll have to clean the valves, and also carry out various maintenance activities.
So it would be ideal to consider all the repair and maintenance factors. The reason is that in one way or the other, such requirements affect the overall efficiency of the device.
Well, these are among the key factors which you should necessarily look into when shopping for an angle valve. As you can see, they are quite involving. So it means that you need ample time to do your research before ultimately making the right choice.
What also happens is that purchasing an angle valve can be a costly investment. Therefore, you need to ensure that you make the right choice which of course suits all your needs.
In the next chapter, I want us to go through a systematic process that you can follow when in need of replacing angle valves. So let’s now shift gears and look at some of the details it involves;
Chapter 8: Step-by-step Process How to Replace Angle Valves
As we did see in the earlier chapter of this guide, we have quite a number of angle valves. The truth nonetheless is that t some in time;
you’ll have to change or replace the angle valves due to various reasons.
It could be inefficiency, wearing out or possibly you just need to have a better quality angle valve. Therefore, it is quite essential to ensure that you know the basics of replacing the angle valves, especially for your residential applications.
Interestingly, the process is quite simple, and you do not have to get the assistance of a plumber as long as you have all the right tools. Now let me take you through a few steps by step process of replacing angle valves;
1) Ensure that you have all the right tools
Remember that before you even start doing this operation, you need to have all the relevant materials and tools. At the same time, you must also have the replacements ready with you. It helps significantly because it shows that you’ll do the work faster and efficiently.
2) Now turn off the water
Presumably, by the time you’re replacing the angle valve, it could still be functional. Well, you need to turn off the water to prevent messing up the working area. Also, you still need to turn it off because without doing so you can hardly replace the device. Turning off the water nevertheless has to be from the main shut off.
3) Disconnect the supply horse
The next step in the process is to disconnect the water supply hose from the top of the angle valve. An easier way of attaining this is by using your pliers to turn it loose. Once you have done so, you now take off the retaining nut to loosen the valve.
4) Remove the angle valve
Now take your pliers and use it to remove the angle valve. Still, remove the compression ring off the edge of the hose pipe. And then you can also remove the retaining nut that you had to loosen earlier.
5) Fix a new retaining nut
Immediate you remove the old retaining nut, replace it with a new one. Then you can fix the compression ring on its specific spot on the pipe. Use your plumber’s tape to wrap around the threads then tighten the nuts.
6) Reconnect water supply
Once every aspect of tightening is up and running, you can now connect water supply again. Monitor how it functions and if you can detect any kind of leakage, ensure that you tighten it further using your pliers.
When you’re sure, there is no leakage at all you can now fully turn on the water and continue with the normal operation.
You can imagine it’s that simple to replace an angle valve. In fact, less than 1 minutes you could be done with replacing this component. But at the same time, you need to ensure that you guarantee your safety as you undertake the process.
However, if you find it a little bit complicated, you can as well choose to seek the assistance of a qualified plumber to take you through the process. But trust me this is purely a DIY procedure that takes the shortest time possible.
Chapter 9: Applications of Angle Valves
So far, it is quite apparent that angle valves are some of the most significant devices in enhancing the performance of various commercial and industrial processes.
You actually do not require rocket science to determine the effect that this device has on various fluid flow operations. In that regard, it would also be important to mention that the applications of angle valves are quite numerous and fundamental.
By the way nowadays, we use this type of product in various applications, making it one of the fundamental component in different operations.
For that reason, I want us to look at some of the applications where the use of this device tends to be common.
I. Hydraulic plumbing
Ideally, this is one of the most common applications of angle valves. It refers to the type of plumbing where pipe connections via the threads to allow for continuous passage of fluid. Well, hydraulic plumbing is always subjected to high-pressure fluids, and the use of angle valves, in this case, becomes fundamental.
Figure 51 Plumbing system
What happens is that in hydraulic plumbing, the pipe connections would always deform the threads, especially when tightened. Also, any subsequent movement of the pipes would loosen or tighten the pipe hence exposing it to high leakage potential.
But you see, when you choose to use angle valve in hydraulic plumbing, it becomes easy since it is capable of containing the pressure.
II. Shut off valves at the water intake of plumbing fixtures
This is also the other area which the use of angle valve tends to dominate. In many residential places, commercial premises and industrial processes, you’ll realize that use of shut off valves are common.
Figure 52 Angle stop valve
Of course, they assist in controlling the flow of water from one point to another and other similar functions. Importantly, is to know that angle valves play crucial roles in such applications hence you need to notice the signs.
III. Flow Divider
This refers to a type of metering valve that divides or adds together a total flow rate be it evenly or in some cases using a fixed ratio. The efficiency of this component is highly dependent on the type of angle valve that is using.
Figure 53 Flow divider in swimming pool
The design of this component is geared towards accurately dividing flow from a single hydraulic source into two or more separate output flows.
IV. Toilet
Perhaps many people never imagine that toilets are some of the major applications where the use of angle valves is also common. Well, the truth is that all modern toilets use this device to flush the various wastes that people deposit. and it’s easy for toilet shut off valve replacement.
Figure 54 Toilet plumbing system
The working mechanism of a flushing toilet is in such a manner that enables it to enhance pressure of draining the wastes. So in most cases, you may not be able to see it in actuality. However, you have to know that the moment you flush your toilet, an angle valve plays a significant role in enhancing its efficiency.
V. Sink
Sinks are also the other areas where angle valves are used. There are quite different types of sinks, especially in a residential place. Kitchen sink and bath tabs are the common ones who use this particular device most of the time.
Figure 55 Kitchen sink
So you’ll find that there is a manner that the angle valve helps the working mechanism of the sinks to drain water effectively.
VI. Washbasin
It is more or less similar to the sink only that this one is commonly used in the bathroom.
Figure 56 Wash basin plumbing system
Washbasin also utilizes the angle valve in making sure that the pressure of draining water is sufficient.bathroom sink shut off valve leaking
VII. Shower room
If you observe keenly, you’ll notice that shower always drain in relatively high pressure. Well, the pressure is something that the angle valve always determine since it controls or regulates it.
Figure 57 Shower room
Therefore, you may not be aware of the same, but the truth is that this device is fundamental in determining the effectiveness of the shower.
VIII. Washing machine
This unit also uses an angle valve given that it uses quite a significant amount of pressure. The design of its working principle is in such a manner that enables it to control the overall pressure according to the particular setting.
Figure 58 Washing machine angle valve
And this is what guides it to become efficient in washing different types of apparels.
IX. Icebox maker
The icebox maker tends to use quite a lot of compression of fluids and gases. So, it means that it needs sufficient pressure which also needs to be controlled if at all it has to attain the desirable results.
Figure 59 Ice maker parts
And in that case, you’ll find that an angle valve becomes essential in this unit since it enables it to make the ice after compression process.
So these are majorly the common applications of the angle valve. Indeed, you can find others since this device comes in a wide range of types.
And in that case, it means that you can also use them in a wide range of applications hence making it an ideal unit in the modern day technology.
But then, there is always the aspect of finding the right place or manufacturer of this device. It can be challenging, but for the sake of this guide, I’ll let you know the most reliable manufacturer of this unit in the next chapter.
